Ramsbottom United (a) 22nd August 2015

Tuesday night’s late defeat to Colwyn Bay means we have just a single point from our opening two games, fair to say it isn’t the start that we were hoping for. We move on to our next game which is away at Ramsbottom United, a game I was desperately hoping to make it to, but find myself working.

Like ourselves, Ramsbottom have not had the greatest of starts, suffering 1-0 defeats at Rushall Olympic and at home to Buxton, if you haven’t seen the mass brawl that occurred in the latter game, you can do so by clicking here

Considering the relative proximity geographically of the two sides, I find it quite amazing that there is no record of any previous meetings between the sides in the database. Having a quick flick through Mike Pavasovic’s excellent history books also draws a blank, certainly in terms of competitive games.

Ramsbottom do have a couple of players who have been previously been at Ewen Fields. Andy Fitzgerald and Grant Spencer, brother of Scott are both with the club. Shelton Payne also played in one game this season but has now decided to retire from football.

Previously on August 22nd we have played nine matches (back to 1978/79) of which we have…
Won 3
Drawn 4
Lost 2
Scored 14
Conceded 9

The last time we played on this date was in 2011 when a Matt Berkeley double and goals from Ryan Crowther and Scott Spencer saw us defeat Hinckley United 4-0. The earliest database game on this date was in 1981 as we beat Darwen 2-1 in the Cheshire League Challenge Cup with goals from Steve Johnson and Barney Daniels.

League Positions
I know it’s early but Hyde are 19th and Ramsbottom 22nd.

Colwyn Bay (a) 18th August 2015

I’ll start with some facts from the weekend. Saturday’s draw against Grantham was the first time Hyde have got anything on the opening day since 2012 when we drew 2-2 at Braintree Town, again having a player sent off and paying for it. The last time we won in the season opener was in 2011, our title winning season when we defeated Worcester City 2-1. In four out of our last five opening day fixtures we have had a player sent off. 2011 – Brett Renshaw, 2012 – Andy Pearson, 2013 – Josh Brizell, 2015 – James Burke. Ayrton Bevins scored twice on his debut and was the first player to score on debut since Ryan Masterson in September last year. The database shows 56 players making a goalscoring debut. Only five members of the starting eleven had played a competitive game for Hyde before, James Burke, Shane Killock, Andy Pearson, Reece Gray and Scott Spencer.

Onto the next game against Colwyn Bay. The Seasiders were relegated from the Conference North last season along with ourselves, although they were unfortunate to go down on the final day of the season, losing out on goal difference to Stalybridge Celtic. Colwyn Bay have been regular opponents of ours over the last three decades or so and the sides have met on 38 occasions since December 1981. Hyde have won 16 of these ties, Colwyn Bay have won 14 and there have been 8 draws.Overall, a fairly even record between the sides. Our last meeting was on December 28th 2014 when the sides played out a 3-3 draw at Llanelian Road when Ted Cribley equalised late on for The Tigers. For me personally, the most memorable fixtures between the sides came in September 1994 in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round. Heading into the final minute of the game, Hyde were 2-0 down and seemingly going out of the competition, when Gary Simpson gave us a tiny amount of hope by pulling a goal back and then late into stoppage time Oshor Williams pounced to send us to an unlikely replay. Two days later, back at Ewen Fields, Hyde were 8-0 winners with Colin Little bagging five goals and we went on the reach the First Round.
Colwyn Bay started the season away at Halesowen and were beaten 1-0, I’m sure they will want to grab a win in their first home game.

In previous ties on August 18th our record is..

2 Wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats.

The last time we won on this date was way back in 1984 with a 4-1 win away at Southport with John Timmons scoring a hat trick.

Grantham Town (H) 15th August 2015

Now, I can’t pretend I’ll be doing a preview for every game this season, it just won’t happen, but I will try to do a couple a month at least. So first up this Saturday we face Grantham Town to open the 2015/16 season.

With no form to look at, it isn’t going to be a very long preview either, but we’ll see where it goes…

Saturday 15th August 2015 – 15:00hrs
Hyde United v Grantham Town
Evostik (NPL) Premier Division
Venue: Ewen Fields, Hyde

Obviously with no points on the board yet it is difficult to assess where the two teams have done well or not. Hyde have brought in a number of players over the summer as Gary Lowe looks to turn around the fortunes of the side oer the last couple of seasons. Former players Scott Spencer and Shane Killock have returned to the club along with Reece Gray who has been unfortunate with injuries in the last couple of seasons.

Grantham finished last season, their 3rd in the Evostik Premier Division, in 12th place, building on 15th and 19th places before that and will no doubt be looking to improve again.

Previous Meetings

Last Meeting: 13th October 1984 – NPL Premier – Grantham 0 Hyde United 0

Played 9 – Hyde Wins 5 – Draws 3 – Grantham Wins 1

All of our nine meetings came in a two year spell between 1982 and 1984 when both sides were NPL Premier Division members. Grantham’s only win came at Ewen Fields in the FA Trophy in December 1983 as they came away 4-0 winners. Interestingly, the three draws between the sides were all goalless affairs. The Gingerbreads have visited Ewen Fields on the opening day of the season before on 20th August 1983 when Peter Coyne netted twice to give Hyde a 2-1 win. So whilst Hyde may have the upper hand historically, it counts for nothing with the last meeting being 31 years ago. Also interesting to see that Gary Lowe made two appearances for Hyde against Grantham in the 1984/85 season, one of which was a 4-0 win.

Previous Matches on August 15th

Only three games appear in the database (back to 1978/79 season) for this date.

2009: Hinckley United 1 Hyde United 2
2005: Hyde United 1 Workington 1
1981: Chorley 1 Hyde United 0

So a win, a draw and a defeat.

Scott Spencer, 49 goals, requires one more to hit 50 for the club.

Here is hoping for a strong start to the season!
