Colwyn Bay (a) 18th August 2015

I’ll start with some facts from the weekend. Saturday’s draw against Grantham was the first time Hyde have got anything on the opening day since 2012 when we drew 2-2 at Braintree Town, again having a player sent off and paying for it. The last time we won in the season opener was in 2011, our title winning season when we defeated Worcester City 2-1. In four out of our last five opening day fixtures we have had a player sent off. 2011 – Brett Renshaw, 2012 – Andy Pearson, 2013 – Josh Brizell, 2015 – James Burke. Ayrton Bevins scored twice on his debut and was the first player to score on debut since Ryan Masterson in September last year. The database shows 56 players making a goalscoring debut. Only five members of the starting eleven had played a competitive game for Hyde before, James Burke, Shane Killock, Andy Pearson, Reece Gray and Scott Spencer.

Onto the next game against Colwyn Bay. The Seasiders were relegated from the Conference North last season along with ourselves, although they were unfortunate to go down on the final day of the season, losing out on goal difference to Stalybridge Celtic. Colwyn Bay have been regular opponents of ours over the last three decades or so and the sides have met on 38 occasions since December 1981. Hyde have won 16 of these ties, Colwyn Bay have won 14 and there have been 8 draws.Overall, a fairly even record between the sides. Our last meeting was on December 28th 2014 when the sides played out a 3-3 draw at Llanelian Road when Ted Cribley equalised late on for The Tigers. For me personally, the most memorable fixtures between the sides came in September 1994 in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round. Heading into the final minute of the game, Hyde were 2-0 down and seemingly going out of the competition, when Gary Simpson gave us a tiny amount of hope by pulling a goal back and then late into stoppage time Oshor Williams pounced to send us to an unlikely replay. Two days later, back at Ewen Fields, Hyde were 8-0 winners with Colin Little bagging five goals and we went on the reach the First Round.
Colwyn Bay started the season away at Halesowen and were beaten 1-0, I’m sure they will want to grab a win in their first home game.

In previous ties on August 18th our record is..

2 Wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats.

The last time we won on this date was way back in 1984 with a 4-1 win away at Southport with John Timmons scoring a hat trick.
